A protest at what they described as “a Government failure to redeem preelection promises to adjust glaring anomalies respecting superannuation,” was expressed at a mass meeting of railwaymen in Wanganui when a resolution of protest was carried, stating: “Social security has materially altered the whole question of State superannuation schemes. We claim that the benefits gained by payment of contributions have no more rignt to be regarded as a bar to full social security benefits than the ordinary savings of a non-contributor to the superannuation fund. We claim also that payment of social and national security tax that our memebrs are called upon to meet is the very antithesis of fair treatment.”
