COW DERAILS ENGINE

P.A. WANGANUI, August 15. When it struck a cow which had strayed on to the line at the southern end of Kakaramea station about 11.15 to-day, an A.B. class locomotive, weighing 85 tons, and hauling tne New Plymouth-Wellington express, was completely derailed. The leading car was also derailed. None of tne two hundred and seventy passengers on the train was injured. The main New Plymouth-Wanganui line was blocked for several hours, and tram services were! disorganised. The express consisted of' seven cars and a van. It -was passing through Kakaramea, a non-stop station, five miles north of Patea. A breakdown tram was despatched from Wanganui at 12.5 p.m. and a relief express tram went from Wanganui to cater for Wanganui passengers and those from south stations.
