WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent; ‘ WESTPORT, August 15. The Holmlea arrived from Wellington yesterday, loaded coal, and sailed last evening for Wanganui. The Kartigi arrived last evening from Auckland, for which port she is loading coal. The Kaimiro, from Auckland, is also loading for that port. The Titoki, which arrived last night from New Plymouth, sailed this morning for Nelson with coal. The Wingatui sailed this morning for Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Wilson and daughter of Christchurch, are visiting friends here. Mr. D. Gillespie left yesterday for Motueka.

Mr. J. Dowgray left for Wellington yesterday to attend a meeting of Directors of the Bank of New Zealand.

Mrs. R. Jenkins arrived from Nelson this afternoon to meet her husband who returned this evening from service in the Pacific area. Messrs W. Duncan and A. Hunter have returned from a conference of the Dominion Sawmillers’ Federation at Wellington. S/Sgt. A. McNeur returned this evening from service in the Pacific area.

The condition of Ronga Ropata, who was injured in a motor cycle accident at Waimangaroa on Sunday evening was to-day reported to oe very satisfactory. War Savings here last week totalled £2,163, or £1,908 in excess of the quota. Denniston, Granity-Millerton and Karamea also exceeded their quotas.

Last week, 26 tons of timber, approximately 12,000 feet, was railed from Westport to the East Coast. Coal railed from Buller totalled 453 tons, while 68 tons of other goods was also carried on the Buller Gorge railway. Revenue amounted to £5BB for outward freight, while £219 was the revenue for 881 passenger journeys on the Westport section. The gate takings at the Seddon Shield match on Saturday amounted to £l9l.

The Technical School closes for holidays on Thursday till September 5. The school is to-morrow sending a Rugby team and two basketball teams to Greymouth for matches on Thursday with the Grey School, after which they will return that evening.
