VISIT OF HON. J. O’BRIEN

Harbours Question

TO-NIGHT'S PUBLIC ADDRESS. “Westport harbour has been a national harbour and a Government harbour since 1921, and as far as its development is concerned, steps are being taken to get the best engineering advice as to what is going to oe done; and, when that is received, action will be taken. That applies to Greymoutn too.” This comment was made last evening by Pion. J. O’Brien, Minister of Marine and Transport and Member for Westland, when referring to a letter on the matter, received by the Westland Master Builders’ Association, from Mr. James Thorn, Undersecretary to the Prime Minister. Mr. Thorn, in acknowledging receipt of a resolution passed by the Association, in support of one put forward by the Westland District Progress League,- in which it was urged that a deep-sea harbour be provided at some central site on the West Coast, said: “You will no doubt have noticed from the press that Mr. Semple, Minister of Works, has advised the Mayor of Westport that it is the intention of the Government to make Westport a national harbour. I presume that this decision will meet the representations put forward by you.” Mr. O’Brien, who arrived in Greymouth by Saturday's express, will this morning meet a deputation from the Westland District Progress League regarding the harbour, and one from the Taylorville Domain Board regarding a 'bus service for their social functions. At two o’clock this afternoon he will inspect the O’Brien and Mcßrearty Wards at the Grey River Hospital, afterwards visiting Kumara, where he will .meet members of the Borough Council. This evening at 7.30, Mr. O’Brien will give a public address in the Lyceum Hall on the milk question, West Coast Harbours, and other matters. The Mayor of Greymouth (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) will preside. Mr. O’Brien will answer any questions which may be asked. The Minister will leave to-morrow morning on return to' Wellington.
