THE POPE’S AUDIENCE

For Anglican Bishop

(Rec. 6.30.) LONDON, August 12. The Associated Press of Great Gntain reports that the Pope recently talked for forty-five minutes with the Bishop of Lichfield (who is a member of the House of Lords). This is the first time that Pope Pius XII. has given a private audience to an Anglican Bishop. QUESTION OF CHURCH UNION ? (Rec. 7.50.) NEW YORK, Aug. 13. The “New York Times’s” Rome correspondent says: It is believed that Pope Pius XII. and the Bishop of Lichfield at their meeting, discussed the possibility of the reunion of the Church of England with the Roman Catholic Church. In view of the Bishoo of Lichfield High Church predilection, it is thought that he was chosen to seek once again for a common ground under which a fusion of the two communions would be feasible. It is recalled that Lord Halifax’s father and the late Cardinal Mercier of Belgium sounded the possibilities together at their Malines conference, and that during the lasc war Pope Benedict XV. received a group of American clergy, who xavoured Church Union.
