ARGENTINE MEAT
TO BE CUT OUT BY BRITAIN AND U.S.A.
(Rec. 11.0) NEW YORK, Aug. 13. A New York “Herald-Tribune” correspondent at Buenos Aires, in Uruguay says: Argentine business and diplomatic circles have been given to understand that the British and American Governments have decided not to renew the United Nations’ meat contract with Argentina after its expiry. It is considered this is the most significant decision made by Britain and America since they suspended diplomatic relations with the Farrell Government, because meat is the most important single economic feature in Argentina’s relations with the rest of the world. There are large American and British companies in Argentina which export all the Argentine meat to the United Nations. These have been informed by the British and American Embassies that negotiations for a new contract could not possibly be held at present because of the lack of diplomatic relations. The contract, which is one signed by Britain, on behalf of the United Nations, has provided for the purchase of all of Argentina’s exportable meat. It was the biggest contract ever concluded bv Argentina. In two years the United Nations bought twelve hundred thousand tons of Argentine meat for soldiers and civilians.
