PACIFIC ISLAND BASES
Post-war Use by U.S.A. MR, CURTIN'S HINT. (Rec. 11.30.) CANBERRA, July 3. A hint that the United States will be given access to island bases in the Pacific after the war was given today by the Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin). “Access to these bases -is a different thing from sovereignty,” said Mr. Curtin. “I have no doubt whatever that the United Nations in preserving the peace of the world, will make the requisite arrangemehts to ensure that the strategical interests for the preservation of peace will be met.” Mr. Curtin said, commenting on a report from the “Chicago Tribune” in which it was stated that America could not play a full partun preserving peace in the Pacific unless she got the bases she wanted.
