The funeral of the late Eleanor Mary Murphy took place at Orowaiti Cemetery yesterday morning, following Requiem Mass celebrated at St. Canice’s Church bv the Rev Father Phelan who also officiated a.t the graveside. The pall-beare 1 ' 5 were Messrs J. P. Phibbs, J. McEnanev. L. Smith, W. Senior, A. Ha.ndisides, and W. J. Ryan. A large number of mourners attended and floral tributes placed on the grave were numerous.

The death occurred at the Buller Hospital yesterday of Kevin John Rasmussen, aged two years and five months, following a 'brief illness. Deceased was the vpungest son of Mr. and Mrs. I S. Rasmussen.

Excellent music was provided by Mrs. Curtis and Mr. W. Samuels, while Mr. Jack Phibbs played extras. An abundant supper was supplied bv girls of the school . . A function attended by shipping, coal and timber interests took place at the Club Hotel yesterday afternoon to farewell Mr. W. A. Smith, local manager of the Union S.S., Co., Ltd. On behalf of the: gathering Mr. B. J. Mathewson made an appropriate presentation to Mr Smitih. Opportunity was also taken to welcome Mr. Smith’s successor, Mr. P. E. Trevella. An inquest into the death of Mrs. Eleanor Murphy, which occurred at the Buller District Hospital on Monday. was held before Mr. F. H. Morgan J.P., gnd a jui-v of four. Evidence was given that Mrs. Murphy who entered the hospital on Saturday had been suffering from ventral hernia for many, years. On Mondav Dr. P. L. Foote administered a spinal aneasesia, and an operation was commenced with three doctors, in attendance. The operation, ceased wihen the patient appeared to co> lapse. All efforts to revive her with stimulants and artificial respiratioi} failed. A verdict, that Mrs. Murphydied while under an operation for ventral hernia was returned, the 'coroner and jurv being satisfied that possible had been done to restore life A civic reception is to be tendered to the men of the recently returned furlough draft at a social and dance to be ; held in the Friendly Societies Hall on Saturday evening. Members of the Presbyterian Church assembled at St., Andrew’s Hall on Tuesdav evening to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Smith. Reference was made to. the assistance rendered to the congregation by Mr. Smith, as church treasurer, and. regret was expressed at the fam’lyts departure.
