MILLERTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Miss P- cooper ot Westport, was a recent visitor to Millerton. Mr. A. Dowgray. of Granity, last Thursday conducted an instruction for the local St. John Ambulance classes. Hon. W. H. Mclntyre has returned from Wellington. Mesdames Jeffries and Tiplady were the prize winners at the Patriotic Committee’s ' latest euchre tourney, while Mrs. A Woods and Messrs T. Pollock and F. Calder won at the weekly forty fives tourney of the Women’s Institute. At the usual meetin" of the Miners’ Union, Mr. W. Watson presiding, a reply was received from Hon. D. Wilson regarding an increase of the fare for miners travelling between Granity and Millerton. A letter was received from Bradley’s Motors. A letter from Hon. A. McLagan dealt with amendments to the Workers’ Compensation Act, and one from Joyce and Taylor, solicitors, with compensation cases. Hon P. C. Webb wrote regarding representations made to him in connection with Millerton School and matters pertaming to the mine. It was decided to deal further with correspondence from Mr. Benny of the Mines Department. Mr. R. McGregor ('secretary') wrote urging that the Union should be represented at all meetings of the Buller Trades and Labour Council. It was decided to donate £2 2s to the Hydrogenation Committee, in response to a request by Mr. C. Friend (secretary). The mine manager, Mr. O. Davis wrote re mine matters, and Mr. Oxnam, butcher, Westport, wrote re Granity meat supply. The check weight fund was discussed, and it was decided that recent disputes should be referred to the Coal Council. IL was decided to support British Trade* Unions protesting against the release of the Mosleys, the members claiming they were giving their best in the war effort and were sure the release of the Mosleys would not strengthen the war effort.
