WAIUTA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent], Sergeant M. D. Jobling, 2nd N.Z.E.F., N.Z.M.C., has been promoted to the rank of 2nd Class Warrant Officer. Sergeant Jobling, who is the only son of Private and Mrs. D. Jobling, saw considerable service in the Middle East, and is at present on duty in New Zealand. Mr. Donald McDonald, a wellknown local resident was removed to the Reefton Hospital during the week for treatment. Mr. T. R. Hogg, Mine Manager, Blackwater Mines Ltd., leaves f° r Wellington on Monday, to attend a sitting of the Board of Examiners. Mr. and Mrs. F. Goldsworthy leave for Christchurch next week, where Mr. Goldsworthy, enters St. George’s Hospital, to undergo an operation. Gunner Sam Hayward who has been visiting Christchurch returned on Saturday evening. Constable R. Mclvor, who was transferred from Waiuta to Dunedin some months ago, has left the Police Force and joined the Royal New Zealand Navy. “Mac’s” many local friends wish him, success in his new surroundings. Mrs V. Leathwick and Miss _M. Rodden, visited Greymouth during the week-end, and attended the annual re-union of the P. and T. employees. . i Mr. A. Duggan, who has been an inmate of the Reefton Hospital for some weeks, has returned home much imoroved in health. Mr. E. Myall, who has. been a resident of the township for a number of years, has left for Blenheim, where he has accepted a position on important defence work. Another well known landmark m Waiuta has been recently demolished, the business premises of the 'late Mrs. C Cole opposite the Empire Hotel. Prior to Mrs Cole purchasing the place in the early days of the townshio. it was used as a restaurant and sly firqg shop, prior to the advent of a licensed house m the townshio. Waiuta in those days, was a real Wild West town, of course the present dav inhabitations have reached a high standard of civilisation. 1
