The Kaimiro is expected to-day irom Greymouth to load for Napier ana the Kaitoa from Tarakohe loads tor Picton. The Korowai Is due to-mor-row from Wellington. Mr. W. Seaton arrived by plane from Wellington yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. C. Walker, who have been visiting Christchurch returned by rail-car last evening. Mrs. Kearns, who has been to urejmouth, returned last evening. Mr. A. E. Jones left for Wellington by plane yesterday. Mr. R. Patterson returned from Christchurch yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Head left on a holiday visit to Christchurch by rail-car yesterday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. A. Fletcher who have been visiting relations at Bluit, 1 imaru and Chr’stchurch, returned home bv last evening’s rail-car. Mrs. Cargill returned last evening from Christchurch. . ot Mr. E. The services at St. John s Church and at the graveside were conducted bv the Rev. S. Coiney. Messrs L. Powick. F. Roselli, L. Morgan and H. Palmer w’ero the pall-bearers. The number °f beautiful tributes received marked the nign esteem in which deceased was held. Mr J M. Robertson, chairman ot Buller District Patriotic Committee acknowledges the following donations for 1943 appeal: Mr. and Mrs. P. Morgan 10s; house to house collections per Miss E. Fairhall 11s; Junior Red Cross, Denniston, per Nurse McGregor 10s for soldiers’ parcels. Fire which broke out through internal combusion in the extended Denniston mine a week ago, is still burning fiercely, though it has been largely controlled bv three concrete sealings. The heat has been so great, however, that it has been difficult to keep the fire froin spreading through the concrete. No mining is being done in this section and is thought that it will be several weeks at least before the fire is extinguished. On Monday, evening tl.e South School Gala‘Day Committee held a meeting to finalise the programme for the different events to he he Id 1 on Saturday next when a sports day will be held to raise funds for the children’s swimming pool. The committee got through a lengthy programme of business, and Mr. C’aigou. the headmaster, and his staff, are also working assiduously to make the day a huge success. At. the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Matthewson, chairman, thanked all who had attended, and especially the ladies for commg along in such large numbers. He hoped thev would be well rewarded for thir efforts. ' At the Ratepayers’ Association meeting held last evening, Mr. D. Maloney handed in the sum of £lB 14s, which he and Mr. Norris had collected from residents for the purnose of providing street seats for old people. The president, Mr. Fairba:rn. expressed the association’s appreciation to Messrs Maloney and Norris and it was decided to acknowledge by letter all donations of more than £l. The cost of each seat is about £3 17s 6d and it is hoped to have two completed bv Friday. One will he placed outside the Town Hall and one in Pakington Street. These seats were presented by Hon. P. C. Webb and Mr. Wicks. Criticism of the fact that private footpaths were being made by borough workmen when public footpaths were in need of repair, was voiced by Mr. G. M. Maxwell. Mr. Fairbairn pointed out that private work was a source of revenue to the Borough Council, while Mr. Howard explained that private work was done when conditions nrevented the sealing of streets. Mr. Maxwell suggested that efforts he made to have the speed of taxis reduced, nart’cularlv at nights, and it. was decided to make a recommendation to the Borough Council to that effect. Mr. Sutherland, the secretary was elected to represent the association at the dinner in honour of the opening of the Buller Gorgq railwav on Friday.
