FORTRESS RAID

On Rhine Town SEVEN PLANE LOSSES A-SIDE. (Rec. 5.20) LONDuis, Nov. 30. Flying Fortresses, escorted oy Lightnings and Thunderbolts, attacked Solingen on Tuesday. K.A.F., Dominion and Allied S'pitm'es and Typhoons covered the Fortresses in their withdrawal, and destroyed six enemy planes. Fortresses destroyed one. Two Allied heavy bombers and live fighters are missing. The Air Ministry says: Typhoon fighters, after sweeping enemy bases m support of the Fortresses, surprised a squadron of Focke-Wults 190, that were circling to land at their base in Holland. The Typhoons in a five minute attack, destroyed four Focke-Wulfs and one Junker 188. The latter is a new type of German fighter-bomber. . The Fortresses encountered little fighter opposition at Solingen, which is a heavily industrialised town. It is one of the few Rhineland towns which have hitherto escaped heavy Allied attacks. It was attacked only once before, by the R.A.F. in 1940.

ENEMY CONVOY ATTACKED. (Rec. 12.45.) LONDON. Dec. 1. The Air Ministry in a communique states: A Coastal Command R.C.A.F. squadron of Beaufighters yesterday attacked an enemy convoy off the Norwegian Coast. Hits were seen on two merchantmen. Bomber Command Mosquitoes last night attacked objectives in Western Germany. Mines were also laid in enemy waters. None of the planes are missing. GERMAN FOREIGN OFFICE. BOMBED OUT OF BERLIN. (Rec. 10.40) LONDON, Dec. 1. According to the Berne correspondent of the Stockholm paper “Svenska Dagbladet” the German Foreign Office* is preparing to evacuate to Breslau from Berlin. Its building was badly damaged last week in the raids on Berlin.
