STOCKTON NOTES

Mr. A. McArthur, National representative for the Buller district on the United Mine Workers’ Council, addressed the employees of the Stockton Company on Monday re the urgency of working on back Saturdays to keep up the supplies of coal. The members on dav shift decided to work on "May 15 and the back shift men were in favour of working on pay Saturdays to avoid the back shift work on Saturday. The Stockton mine is a double shift mine and, there is njo doubt that if the production can be obtained by the men working all day shift for the extra shift required per fortnight, it will be work advantageous to all concerned. Misses A. Evans, H. Steele, and- G. Berdinner have arrived from Christchurch and are spending the term holidays with their parents in the township. Miss J. Roberts of Christchurch, an old resident of Stockton, is spending a holiday with Mr. and Mis. H. Evans.

Messrs C. Hunter and J. MacArthur. Inspectors of Mines, paid a visit to the Stockton workings cn Wednesday. Miss.K. O’Hara of Westport, is a visitor to the township and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. Carroll. Messrs F. Connew and H. L. Evans were visitors to Westport for a meeting of the Buller Miners’ Central Committee.

Lieutenant A. and Mrs. McGregor returned to Blenheim on Wednesday after spending a short holiday with Lieutenant McGregor’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. McGregor. Missl E. Rees of Christchurch is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr. and-Mrs. D. G. Rees. Ina and Kathbleen Kelly of Blackball are spending the term holidays with their grandmother. Mrs. S. Clarke. Mr L. Clarke, a former resident of Stockton has started work for the Westport Stockton Coal Company. Private W. Morgan of the N.Z.A.S.C., is spending leave with his mother, Mrs. J. Morgan. Mrs. H. L. Evans and Master Keith Morgan were visitors to Westport last week. The “Aid to Russia” whist drive was held on Monday evening. Mrs. W. Shearer was successful in winning. Mrs. S. Chippendale secured second prize. The Patriotic Committee held the weekly euchre; tournament in the library on Tuesday evening. The prize winners were: Mrs. Morgan, snr., Mrs. S. Chippendale, and Mr. D. Miller.

Mr. and Mrs H. Morgantv returned to Westport on Wednesday, after spending a holiday with Mr. T. Berdinner. .
