DUNEDIN MILK SUPPLY

DUNEDIN, May 16. The opinion that the nailk supplied to Dunedin consumers, and the pasteurisation carried out, were het satisfactory, was expressed by Dr. Watt, senior assistant to the Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Otago, when giving evidence before the Cities Milk Commission. At the same time evidence by medical witnesses tended to show that piopei pasteurisation was the safest method of ridding milk of infection. Dr. T. McKibbin, District Healtn Officer, expressed the opinion that milk supplies were generally satisfactory. He understood that the local plant for sterilising bottles was not big enough to cope with the number of_bottles and unless these were properly sterilised the protection of pasteurised milk might be illusory A statement from Professor C. B. Hercus was read, which summed up the tests as showing that the standard of raw milk was generally of poor hygenic quality, and that after pasteurisation it was frequently recontaminated before being received by the consumer.

RIGHT-HAND RULE. DUNEDIN, May 13. “While I appreciate that the recent decision of the Full Court on the right-hand rule clears the an, 1 emphatically disagree that the position has been improved. On the contrary I consider that unless the regulation is amended without a el a Y’ the effect on road traffic can best be described as suicidal.” This opinion was expressed by Mi E H Barnett, Chief Traffic Inspector. who held that the rule should apply only to two vehicles approaching an intersection from different streets. He believed the new rule would impose an unfair burden on the driver proceeding straight ahead in the case of vehicles in the same street approaching an intersection from opposite directions. He would be looking ahead for traffic approaching on his right, and for pedestrians, and at the last moment he might be faced with a vehicle cutting across his bows. The lime appeared to be overdue when .main road traffic should have the right of way.
