FLOWER SHOW

BLACKBALL SCHOOL. A very large crowd of parents and others gathered at the Blackball School at the end of the term to witness the opening of the first flower show held at the school. In declaring the show open, the chairman of the school committee, Mrs F. Mason, said that she had come along not knowing quite what to expect, but, after having made a careful inspection of almost two hundred exhibits, she had been surprised that such a wide and comprehensive

range of flowers had been prepared and tastefully arranged by the children. The show would have done credit to adult exhibitors. She complimented the children on their efforts and trusted that the function would be the forerunner of many similar in the future. The show had been held, stated the Headmaster (Mr M. P. Lyng, 8.A.) in order to widen the scope of the children’s activities as well as to promote .a more active interest in the school on the part of the parents and of the people of Blackball generally. The Pets’ Parade held recently had initiated the efforts being

made to make the general public school-conscious and had been attended by some forty persons. The present function had attracted a very much larger attendance and had been a surprise to parents and teachers alike. He was delighted that so much enthusiasm had been shown by the children who were beginning to regard the school not only as a place where they received a general education, but also as a place where their own individual interests were catered

for as far as the facilities of the school permitted. He wished to thank Mrs M’. Goodall for the .excellent manner in which she had organised the show, the unqualified success of which must have been very gratifying to her. The difficult task of judging the exhibits was in the capable hands of Mrs P. S. James. OLD PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee, the Headmaster referred to the suggestion which he had put forward at the end of last year that an endeavour should be made to form an association of old pupils of the school. After a full discussion, the chairman was appointed to call a public meeting to ascertain what support would be forthcoming in the matter.
