WAIUTA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mrs H. A. Ord, who underwent an operation at the Christchurch Hospital last week is making satisfactory progress. Mr and Mrs W. Dainer, who were married during the Easter holidays, have returned from Christchurch. Mr A. Lulham, who underwent an operation at the Reefton Hospital last week is progressing satisfactorily. Mr and Mrs T. Lewellyn are spending the term holidays in the Westport district. Miss Moore of the teaching staff of the local school, is visiting Timaru. Mrs B. Williams is spending a holi day in Dunedin. Private D. Jobling and Sapper W. P. Rodden are spending leave in the township. Nolene Rodden, of the Waiuta school, was awarded second prize in the May Day Essay for school children, conducted by the Magazine Page of the “Argus.” A party of mining students, who are touring the mining fields of the West Coast, visited Waiuta during the week. Messrs O. Ryan .and WLee. two former residents were among the • party. The death took place in Wellington last week of Mr Tony Baran. The late Mr Baran, who was a native of Yugoslavia, was 43 years of age, and had been employed at the Blackwater Mines for a considerable period. He left here some few years ago, and successfully conducted a restaurant in Wellington. He leaves a widow' and one son, residing in Yugoslavia, also a daughter in Wellington, to whom the sympathy of . the community is extended. j The Home Guard Ball, to be held in the Miners’ Hall this Saturday evening, promises to be a great success. Mr L. Page, and his committee are working hard.
