U.S. PLANE PRODUCTION
ESTIMATE FOR 1944,
(Rec. 9-5.) WASHINGTON, May 12. Production of all types of aircraft for 1944 were estimated by President Roosevelt at a cress conference at 1,417,000,000 pounds compared with 919 000,000 pounds in 1943. He expressed the belief that American factories were turning out more planes than the rest of the world combined. He explained'that he put the figures in pounds because the emphasis has been shifted to production of heavier planes. We are now building relatively more heavy bombers, long-range fighters and cargo planes, designed to take' the offensive, whereas production at first emphasised, light bombers, dive-bombers, and fighters needed for defensive tactics. He added that the heavy bomber output was about six months, ahead of last December’s schedule. The weight of these bombers was ten times that of single-engined fighters..
