Glenn returned last evening from a visit to Wellington ' Miss A. E. Radford left yesterday oh a holiday visit to Dunedin Twenty-three American Marines on furlough in New Zealand, arrived m Westport on Tuesday and were met by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Robertson) and Mrs E. D. Dunn and Mrs Hullah. Ten of the number were allotted to the country and left by the 4.10 p.m. train for their respective billets, whilst the others were billetted in town. Immediately on their arrival, the Mayor made a’ brief welcoming speech in which he assured the visitors that they would find the people on the Coast very friendly and he felt sure that their stay here would be very, pleasant., The private interment of the late Robert Henry Gilbert took place at Orowaiti Cemetery on Tuesday morning. The Rev. S'. Corney conducted the service at the residence and also at the graveside. There were many floral tributes. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. Keesing, B. Stowell, T. Parkhouse and J. Watson.

The large gathering of friends and relatives which attended the funeral of the late Thomas McNeight which took place at Orowaiti Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, marked the great respect in which deceased was held m the district. The Rev. R. Simpson conducted the service at the residence at Granity and also at the graveside, where he paid a. tribute to the deceased as a good citizen. There were many beautiful floral tributes. The pall-bearers were Messrs P. Power, J. Atkinson, J. Gibson, M. Thompson, R. McGavin and G. Rennie.

At a recent' examination held m Westport the following St. John Ambulance cadets passed their firefighting proficiency examination: W. Phibbs, G. Getley, L. Forsythe, L. Roselli, K. McDonagh, H. Hunter. J. Cummings, Ray, A. Agent, C. Carter, L. White, G. Marshall, R. Coleman. M. Callaghan, W. Bennett, G. Bird and J. Henshaw. Messrs L. Nelson, Superintendent, and W. Andrews Cadet Officer added: “We wish to thank Messrs Jones, Phibbs and Daily for the interest thev nave taken in the cadets in teaching and examining them in this work.”
