AIR RAIDS IN ENGLAND

On Friday and Saturday

(Rec. 7.30) RUGBY, Jan. 23. There were aircraft active over the southern coast of England on Saturday. There bombs and machinegun fire did damage to two places, at one of which there were a small number of casualties, including some killed. Early on Friday night a few enemy aircraft dropped bombs at scattered places in north-eastern England, and southern England, from some of which a small number of casualties resulted. Some damage is also reported. LONDON RAIDS. SCHOOL CASUALTIES LONDON, Jan. 22. The death roll of the bombed London school is now' 57. Rescuers worked all last night in an attempt to locate bodies. Squads of a hundred men worked in shifts, aided by a mobile crane, and under the light of flares. Some wreckage remains to be cleared, but it is thought, unlikely that any further bodies will be recovered. STRENGTH OF DEFENCE SHOWN. The raiders approached England flying at 0 feet to deceive the de--1 fences—in the same way as the Royal Air Force approaches Europe in daytime—then they climbed when they crossed the coast and prepared for bombing. It is estimated that 130 enemy aeroplanes participated in the raid, and that thirty made a dash for London, while others patrolled over the sea awaiting their return. The fact that fourteen were shot down and that only six reached London Indicated the strength of the defence. By not allowing the fighter escort to accompany the lighter-bombers the Germans showed how they must still conserve their rationed forces lacing Britain. The raid achieved no military object, but by hitting a school and killing children it aroused intense anger.
