WELLINGTON R.C. Chief Event to Rakanui RINK WINS JANUARY. P.A. TRENTHAM, Jan. 23. Perfect weather conditions prevailed to-day for the concluding day of the Wellington meeting. The track was firm and fast. Large crowds were present. The racing was delayed for an hour on account of a train smash involving passengers to Trentham. Results were:— Mungaroa Highweight Handicap.— 7/5 STAIRWAY (C. A. Brown) 1; 5/4 Nightglass 2; 8/8 Gunga' Din 3. Scr.: Kinsman. Won by a length; half a length. Time 2.211. Trial Plate.—4/3 SNOWMAN (P. R'ink won without trouble from Good Scout, which was just clear of Daljarrock. Good Scout, Broadcaster and Indian Sign were slow at the start. Enrich took up the role of pacemaker, soon being joined by Tautara and Grey Night, and this trio made the running to the straight from Caroline Bay, Rink and Daljarrock, with Ivar, Good Scout and Broadcaster next. Rink ran past the leaders with a furlong to go, while Good Scout came on to beat Daljarrock by a length. The top-weight made a great bid to get up. Lou Rosa, three lengths back, came third. Moutoa Bond and Sir Crusoe were the leaders after two furlongs, followed by Foxola, Tutere and High Class, while the next hunch comprised Royal Lancer, and Arctic Dawn the last horse being Lou Rosa. The leading paid opened up a gap of six lengths racing to the nine furlongs post, but in the next three furlongs the field closed up. With five furlongs to run, Sir Crusoe, Moutoa Bond and Foxola were in front, with Rakanui and Royal Lancer next, then Lou Rosa, Tutere and Arctic Dawn. Rakanui slipped ' the held round the home turn . and, thoUgn Roval Lancer bridged the gap, he failed to head off the leader by a head. Lou Rosa came on to beat Foxola for third, with Battledress, Arctic Dawn, Moutoa Bond and Gladynev following in that order. Eulogist broke down badly during the running of the Wellington Cup, and it is doubtful if he will be able to race again.
