SOLOMONS RAIDS
BY U.S. BOMBERS. WASHINGTON, Jan. 21. A U.S. Navy communique states: United States planes bombed > the Japanese positions at Munda, (in New Georgia Island, north-west of Guadalcanal'), on January 19. The results are not reported. During the early morning of January 20, Flying Fortress heavy bombers scored a bomb hit on a' Japanese destroyer oft Cape Friendship, the easternmost tip of Bougainville. Flying Fortresses escrted by fighters, also attacked two enemy' cargo snips and two destroyers in the Shortland Island area. A. number of enemy Zeros and iloattvpe biplanes intercepted the attack. Eight of these enemy planes were shot down. No hits on enemy snips were observed. One United States I tighter was lost and several Fortresses were damaged. During the mornling of January 21, Marauder medium I bombers dropped combs 'on Japanese : positions at Munda. The results were I not observed.
