ON GUADALCANAR
NEW U.S. COMMANDER. WASHINGTON, Jan. 21. Major-General Alexander Patch United States Army, recently assumed command of the United States forces on Guadalcanal*. He relieved General Vandergrift, who commanded since the initial occupation by Marines last August. Most of the Marines, who made the original landing at Guadalcanar, have been replaced by Army personnel. i Mr. Patterson (Assistant War Secretary) said that the Marines from Guadalcanar were now getting a much needed .rest. He explained that General Patch was relieving General Vantergnft, and this did not affect General Harmon’s general command under Admiral Halsey.
