Mr. J. Smeaton, Mayor of Brunner, and his daughter, Mrs. C. E. Broad, left for Christchurch by last evening’s rail-car.

The Hon. M. Connelly, M.L.C., and Mrs. Connelly, who have been visiting the West Coast, will leave tor Christchurch this evening on their way back to Dunedin.

Mr Charles Seymour, of Inangahua Junction, is a patient at the Inangahua Hospital, in a serious condition. He was throwri off a motor jigger and sustained a fractured skull.

Mr James Roberts, of the Waterfront Control Commission, and 'Mr A. E, Bockett (Secretary), who have been visiting Greymouth to arrange the taking over of the Greymouth wharf by the Commission, will leave for Christchurch to-morrow.

Mr and Mrs J. S. Barnett have received advice ' that their eldest son, Sergenat Navigatoi’ W. Barnett, R.N.Z.A.F. has been killed on active service. Aged 22 and a native of Reefton, he was a former pupil of the Reefton District High School and a graduate of Canterbury College. He was for some lane prior to enlistment in the Air Force an assistant at the Reefion School of Mines.

Mr. R. C. Ruffin, Inspector of Mines in Greymouth, has received cabled advice that his son, Mr. Jack Ruffin, has received his commission as sub-lieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm in England. Flight-Lieutenant Ruffin was born in Reetton, but spent his early life in Invercargill, where he was employed on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand before joining the Fleet Air Arm twelve months ago. He underwent training in England, and later went to Canada, where he gained his wings.

The following members of the R.N.Z.V.R. have been promoted - —- Temporary Lieutenant: D. C. Algie (Auckland), also J. S. Sandford. The following are promoted Temporary Acting Sub-Lieutenants in a special branch: F. J. O’Brien (Whakatane). D. J. R. Cooke (Christchurch), also T. E. Haie. The following are promoted Temporary Acting SubLieutenants: W. G. Holder (Wellington), D. S. Hart (Palmerston North), E. H. N. Luke (Napier), P. J. Murphy (Gisborne), also I. G .Owen and G. K. Natusch. R. Hooker (Fleet Air Arm) is promoted Temporary SubLieutenant.
