GOVERNMENT’S ENDEAVOURS
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. That the Government already had the supply position for civilian clothing under consideration was stated by Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Supply,'at Christchurch, to-day, in replying to representations by.the tailors of Christchurch. The stocks of materials on hand had been discussed at a well-attended meeting of the city besnoke tailors on Wednesday evening, and the difficulty of- obtaining supplies was also emphasised. It was stated that the meetingl had decided to place the position before Mie Minister, with ic request that further supplies of suitings from New Zealand mills be made available to the trade. The bespoke tailors sent a deputation to Mr Sullivan. When replying, the Minister said that his Department was at present making a thorough survey of the position in regard to stocks, and other action was being taken. A mission, which had gone to Great Britain from New Zealand, was negotiating for the delivery of supplies to this country, and- representations were also being made in America. The military contracts were also being .reviewed. An endeavour would be made to assist the besnoke tailors, said Mr Sullivan, but the success or otherwise of these endeavours would, in the main, depend upon the success achieved by the Government representatives overseas. to which he had referred.
