LAKE RYAN POACHING

SOCIETY ISSUES WARNING. The Council of the Grey District Acclimatisation Society decided at its meeting on Monday evening, after a report "by the Ranger (Mr. R. A. Dixon) on poaching, particularly at Lake Ryan, decided ito give notice that the lake is a sanctuary and that tirearms, boat'ng and fishing are prohibited. Any person doing anything likely to cause any bird to leave the Sanctuary is liable to prosecution. A report was received from Mr. G L. Pomfret Dodd of Christchurch on the conference with the Minister of Internal Affairs to discuss the possibility of an open season being ae« clared for game in 1943. It stated that the Prime Minister had said that having regard to the war situation, every consideration in due course would be given to the request. The Ranger reported that shags had certainly not been declining; and he thought an organised attempt should be made to reduce their numbers. In some localities the cormorant was to be found in large numbers. The North Island Council advised that the Minister of Marine had ap> ■moved a reduction in the levy for fresh water fish research from onetenth to one-twentieth of the license fees. Though field work had necessarily been diminished, the consolidation of the data already noted was still on hand.
