HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, November 17. The following men are proceeding to camp: L. Wilson, E. C. Woolhouse, A. S. Fahey, A. M. C. O’Brien (Hokitika), S. Tuhuru (Ahaura). . The cutting out of the Sunday bus 1 between here and Greymouth will inconvenience quite a number of people who regularly used that service, which also served as a link with the South Westland service. Messrs S. Godfrey (Koiterangi) and W. Chisnall (Hokitika), on Sunday, fired a clay-bird challenge match at Kokatahi, each scoring 19, and each missing their second and 21st. birds. They were conyratulated by a numerous gathering of spectators. At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council there were presentthe Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock). Crs. C. Caliari, W. H. Stopforth, D. P. Stuart, T. Duff, G. Heinz, K. Aitken, S. Havill and E„ W. Heenan. It was decided to call for tenders for the right to graze sheep in Cass Square tih March 31, also to level and cut two paths through Mac Andrew Square also laying down a lawn. An offer of £5O per annum for five years ny the Westland County Council towards the upkeep of the cemetery was accepted. The Medical Officer of Health reported the local water supply entirely satisfactory. It was decided to continue with Scheme 13 till December, 5. The Clerk was authorised to pay the wages and commitments by December 24. Mrs Park's application for approval of a. sub-division plan was adjourned until next meeting. It was decided to apply to the Public Works Department for use .pf its grader, for one week, to clean streets and roads and grade them for tar-sealing. Cr. Havill tendered his resignation as Chairman of. Works owing to military duties. Cr. Caliari was appointed to the vacancy. A committee consisting of Crs. Caliari, Stopfirth and members of the Works Committee was set up to prepare a schedule of roads and streets to be! cleaned and graded for sealing. The Town Clerk stated the gravel contractor would have _ the gravel ready as required. The Reserves Committee reported that windows had been broken in the Pavilion in Cass Square, and seats reqhired painting, while children’s amusement facilities needed overhauling. The work was placed on the urgent list. Accounts totalling £1,455 9s 6d were passed for payment. Rev. Father Finerty’s application for spoil for school grounds was agreed to, the overseer to supply when it is available. Abattoir fees for the month totalled £B5. It was decided to defer installation of a new tar-boiling plant until conditions improved. It was also decided that Mr Williamson be asked for a report or> the best method of repairing the Library roof, with an estimate of the cost, also for a report as to removing the parapet, and constructing a bungalow roof.
