U.S. WAR SUPPLIES
CRUDE OIL SHORTAGE.
WASHINGTON, October 6. America faces a real shortage of crude ojl unless new fields are discovered. Mr Charles Roeser, former President of the Independent petroleum Association of America, thus warned a Senate sub-committee. The annual consumption from proved underground reserves was already exceeding new production, and nowhere was it being replaced bv new discoveries. FAST SHIP CONSTRUCTION. OAKLAND (California), Oct. 6. Mr Kaiser announced that he is launching the first 3.500 ton “secret tank-landing ship,” prefabricated inland, requiring only half of the quantity of steel used in Liberty ships. • Mr Kaiser, in a statement, declared: “They said it could not ho done, but we will bp turning out two weekly in the new yard." Mr Kaiser who is also constructing three experimental giant cargo ships, in addition to the rapid building. of Liberty ships, expects the new tarik-lander to be fitted-out ready for service in thirty days.
