DENNISTON NOTES

Mrs. W. Hannah, is at present a patient at Denniston Hospital. Mr. R. Colligan. has returned from Westport Hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis. Mr. and Mrs. J. Sands, are paying a holiday visit to the hill, as the guests of Mrs. S. Holbrook. Denniston.

Mrs. L. Ward, has returned from a holiday at Christchurch. Mr.'and Mrs. D. Madden, have returned to the hill after a lengthy stay in Christchurch. Mrs. Todd, has entered the Christchurch Hospital, where she will undergo treatment. Mr. J. Stevens. Chairman of the Medical Association, has resumed work after a lengthy illness. Mr. J. Insull, left last week for Dunedin, and Mrs. Insull left for an extended holiday visit to Wellington.

Denniston Women’s Institute last week sent a batch of parcels to the boys overseas. Mrs. Swan and Mrs. A. Benny, have been visiting their mother, Mrs. J. Martin, of Denniston. Mr. Jock Cullen, is still an inmate of the Denniston Hospital, where he has been ill for a lengthy period. A very pretty wedding took place in the Denniston Presbyterian Church recently, when Catherine Phyllis, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kerr, was united to William Riggins, second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hewitson. The bride was escorted by her father, and wore a beautiful navy frock with accessories to match, and carried a lovely lemon and red bouquet. The bridesmaid, Miss G. Kerr, was dressed in a navy frock with navy accessories, and she carreid a purple bouquet. The recepton was held at the residence of the bride’s mother. In the evening, a public dance was held in the Orange Hall. Marshallvale Women’s Institute’s July meeting was held in the. Marshallvale hall, Mrs. Floyd presiding over a good attendance. The motto for the evening, “Smile a Lot,” was given by Mrs. T. Robertson. In the monthly competitions, the following were the results—Supper cloth: Mrs. J. Kerr Ist., Mrs. J. Robertson 2nd., Mrs. J. Rae 3rd., Mrs. A. Crawford 4th. Ginger Nuts: Mrs. J. Rae Ist.. Mrs. G. Meek 2nd.. Mrs. Slaven 3rd., Mrs. J l . Findlay 4th. The “golden thread” talk, “Famous Composers/’ was continued by Mrs. Crawford on Paderewski. A song-guessing competition caused much amusement, and was won by Mrs. J. Findlay. The Patriotic Committee held a dance in the Orange Hall last Wednesday night, when music was supplied by Miss E. Pullar, and a daintysupper was served by the ladies. Mr. E. Cooper, met with an unfortunate accident at work, when he caused an injury to his foot. Denniston Old Girls A won their match against Rangers A, 13—9, at basketball. Denniston also defeated Rangers B (which gives the cup for the second time running), 15—11.
