(Our Own Correspondent). Mrs. W. Green, of Wellington, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Maddison. Constable R. Peggie, of Christchurch, is spending a holiday here. Mr. J. Maddison, has returned after visiting Greymouth. Mr. W. Strang, junr., has left to take up a teaching appointment at Inangahua Junction. Messrs D. and G. Young, have returned after a visit to Christchurch. Miss J. Swan, of Blenheim, is spending a holiday here with her parents. Mrs. J. Paul, of Westport, is visiting her parents here. Mrs. W. Shearer, junr., and Mr. C. Steele, of Stockton, were the prize winners at the Physical Fitness Committee’s whist drive this week. Ngakawau ladies’ hockey team defeated Millerton by 3 to 2, in a' match here. Last Sunday, a Rugby team of old timers played Rangers on the Domain, the game being in aid of the funds of the Patriotic Committee, in presence of a large crowd, and in ideal weather. In betting, the odds favoured the youths. The old timers won the toss and decided to play with a light wind in their favour. The old time forwards soon had play in their opponents’ twenty-live and, from a free kick, scored. A second free kick coming to them soon after brought another three points, and they led 6—o at half time. The youths scored and converted a try bn resuming, but the veterans then dominated the game until they were awarded a try which Was not converted. The younger element now pressed for a time, but the old time pack came away and looked like scoring once or twice. A breakaway by a youth produced an unconverted try and the game ended 9 —B in the old timers’ favour. Mr. V. Goodall was referee. It is stated quite a number of old timers wish to challenge Rangers, to defeat whom they would have to produce the goods. A Town v. Country match ought to be worth arranging. Messrs J’. Devlin and A. McLagan, National President and Secretary, were present at a special meeting ol the Miners’ Union, at which the latter gave an address on matters of interest to the members. He explained a recent dispute at the McDonald Mine and complications arising, stating a satisfactory settlement had resulted. He also dealt at length with the Dobson Mine dispute, aim gave an outline of the price stabilisation scheme, and indicated a likely amendment to the Compensation lAct. Mr. Devlin also addressed the meeting, and after covering ground dealt with by the previous speaker whose remarks he endorsed, the National President referred to the likelihood of there being this year a general election, pointing out that it was in the best interest of all of the Unions to give the Labour Party their utmost support The speakers were accorded a vote of thanks lor their addresses. Mr. Mcßae, wh 0 is a candidate for the position of Secretary-Treasurer to the National Mine Workers of New Zealand, addressed an open air meeting here on Sunday last at the Domain. He claimed that unionism should be controlled from below, or, in other words, the rank and file of the membership have the deciding say in all issues. He claimed that the position of National Secretary was a full-time job, and that the holder of it should not hold any other position. He said that the cost of living had increased, but that wages had increased in a corresponding degree, seeming always to lag behind. He dealt with a number of other matters, and said that he commended his views to the Union members as being sound ones.
