The Grey Valley Parish had always been a difficult parish to work, but Mr Newman being an arduous worker had met with adequate success. Opportunity was taken to welcome Rev. C. A. F. Scarfe who has been appointed in Mr Newman’s stead. Rev. P. Kirkham (Greymouth), Rev. W. Osborne-Brown and Rev. F. H. Robertson (Runanga), and Rev. C. A. Scarfe and Lieutenant Mehretens (Salvation Army), all referred in eulogistic terms to the work of Mr Newman and his co-op-eration with other ministers in a fine manner. The chairman presented’ Mr Newman with an envelope of notes as a token of the high esteem in which he was held bv his many friends and wished him further success and good health in the future. On behalf of the Sunday School children and their teachers, M’argaret Coates presented the guest with a gift and wished him happiness and success. On returning tnanks, Mr Newman said he did not look for recognition for anything he had done, as without co-operation he could not have accomplished so much. Many appreciative references had been made to his work and he wished to thank one and all for them. Because of his health, he thought it advisable to accept a parish not so widely scattered and difficult to work as the Grey Valley. He hoped one and al] would continue to co-operate with his successor. Rev. Scarfe also returned thanks for the hearty welcome he had received that evening. After supper “Auld Lang Syne’’ was sung.
