RUNANGA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent! „ The Redemptorist Mission being conducted at the Church of the Sacred Heart by Rev. G. V. Gartlan, C. throughout this week is drawing excellent attendances. Each morning at 5.30 o’clock the Church has been filled for the first mass, more than 30 miner s in theii working clothes attending befor e leavmg for work. Th e instructions given by y’ather Gartlan after each mass are much appreciated. The evening devotions are also being attended by large congregations who ar e joining in the prayers for peace. The Mission will conclude on Sunday evening next, at 7 o’clock. Last even ng the "Solemnity in honour of the Blessed Virgin was held, Father Gartlan preaching on the place the Mother of God holds in Catholic devotion. The Runanga tennis team to play Cobden at Cobden on Saturday, i s as follows: Ladies: Misses M. Tyson N. Tyson, J. Tyson, J. Armstrong, Mesdames Henderson and J. Armstrong. Men: Messrs W. Arnor, K. Southward, K. Tims, T. Adamson, A. Hill, and R. McTaggart. Any players who are not available please advise J. Dalzell. Bus leaves Runanga at 1 p.m The members of the Runanga Presbyterian Bible Classes wound up the season in a very enjoyable social evening, held in the Druids’ Hall on Wednesday. A large number of members and friends were present, including visitors from St. John s, Greymouth. Games and competitions were won 'by Misses L. Brown, N. Williams, A. Perrin and Mr R. Wright. Miss H. Smith was the pianist for dancing and community singing. Two dances, “Sword Dance” and “Irish Hornpipe,” contributed by Miss F. Monk, were much appreciated, and a humorous sketch, “Dave and Mabel” was given by Misses Jean Wright and Iri s Darwell. A crazy basketball competition proved enjoyable and exhausting. Miss D. Masters and Mr Cron wer e the winners of a lucky Fox Trot. A dainty supper was served, r.fter which a formal presentation of prizes was made by the Rev. F. H. Robertson, and the evening concluded with “Auld Lang Syne.” Mr R. Jackson, who has been spending holiday at Wellington, arrived home yesterday.
