POLAND OR RUSSIA?
Britain’s Question
[British Official Wireless) RUGBY, December 4
Mr M. P. Gallicher, the only Communist at Westminster, to-day asked the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs: “Why are the Polish forces oeing rapidly armed by Britain, in view of the fact that the Polish Government claims to be in a state of war with the Soviet Government, and that, in their recent proposals to the Soviet, Britain promised not to render assistance to any Power or Powers engaged in war against the Soviet Union?”
Mr Butler replied: “The member’s question is best answered by saying that the Polish forces are being armed against the enemies the British and Polish Government have in common, and not against Powers with which Britain is at peace.” t
In another reply, he recalled that he had often stated he would be glad to welcome any developments likely to maintain and improve their relations with the U.S.S'.R.
