Home Guard: Major Kingscote, District Home Guard Commander for the West Coast, accompanied by the Westport Area Commander, Flight-Lieutenant Hamilton, attended yesterday’s meeting of the County Council and addressed the councillors on Home Guard matters. In introducing Major Kingscote, the County Chairman, Mr D. J. Archer, said that the Council wished to do everything within its power to help with the establishment of the Home Guard. He said that organising such a body in a scattered community such as the Buller presented greater difficulties than in a compact district. However, these were being overcome, and even as far away as Karamea a large number had presented themselves for enrolment. Major Kingscote said that the people in scattered districts were coming forward more enthusiastically than those in the towns. This was specially noticeable in the Grey district, where there were greater enrolments in a small place like Bruninerton than in Greymouth itself. Major Kingscote explained the purposes of the Home Guard, and in illustrating the need for such a body showed how New Zealand was in a far worse position than in the last war. The main purpose of the Guard was to defend New Zealand against a possible invader—invasion being more than just a possibility. It was necessary to defend our homes, but what was more important was to look after the country for the men who were overseas defending it. All that was asked wsa that those who remained in New Zealand should give! a small portion of their leisure hours! to train for the defence of their! country, and that was not asking! much of any man. Flight-Lieutenant! Hamilton’s job said Major Kingscote! was to organise training and, in con-! sultation with the various district Home Guard Committees, to appoint subordinate commanders. After MajoJ Kingscote had concludde, he wa® thanked by the chairman for his adj dress.
