CANTERBURY DROP 4 Beer Duly Up [Per Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. Although the customs revenue collected in Christchurch during July this year was £9,010 less than for Julv, 1939 the total for the first four months of the 1940 financial year, at £750,672, showed an increase of £50,772. Customs duty in J'uly yielded only £68,507, against £92,525 in July last year, but this £24,018 decrease was insufficient to counteract the sharp increase in the first three months of the year, the total for the four months at £385,044, showing an advance of £14,115 on last year s figure. The yield from sales tax also continues to run at a considerably higher level than last year, the total for the four months being £182,495 against £167,740 in 1939, and for July this year was £50,983 against £40,817 last yeaA. Petrol restrictions continue to be reflected in less revenue from petrol and tyre duty, the four months’ yield from petrol being only £86,018, against £106,365 in 1939, and from tyres £3,442 against £3,730.

Beer excise showed an advance in July of more, than 50 per cent, from £10,282 to £16,493, while the four months’ total moved up by £18,067 from £41,472 to £59,539. Details for the four months are:—

DUNEDIN DECLINE DUNEDIN, July 31. There was a sharp drop in the total revenue from Customs and excise duties at Dunedin for the month of July, compared with a corresponding month last year. Petrol tax at. £11,104/16/- was lower by over £2,000 than it was last July. Beer duty and sales tax showed substantial increases, the former being nearly £6OOO higher, and latter over £7OOO in excess of the figure tor July, 1939. Grey Returns INCREASE OF £6351. An increase of £6351 15s Id is shown in the figures for Customs collections at the Customs House Greymouth, during July, as compared with the same month last year. All items show an increase except gold duty, which decreased by £42 13s Id, and customs which declined by £691 19s 2d. Details of the figures are as 10l-
