Mr H. Jackson, an old employee of the local railway is revisiting Westport after an absence of many years. Mr H. Stanley, head teacher at Collingwood District High Schol, has been appointed head leacher at Denniston District High School.

Mr Thomas Glenn, junr., who has been visiting his parents at Westport,left yesterday morning to continue his annual leave at Auckland, before resuming duties with the Railways Road Service, Wellington.

Wedding: Woodcock—Heath--A pretty wedding, and one in which much interest was centred, took place at the Methodist Church, Westport, on Saturday, when the contracing parties were M'ss Noeleen Esme Woodcock, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Woodcock, Domett Street, and Cyril, onlyson of Mr and Mrs W, Heath, Charleston. The bride, wh 0 was given away by her father ,was charmingly attired in magnolia satin and wore a tulle embroidered veil. She was attended by her sister, Miss Merle Woodcock, as bridesmaid who wove pink no', over satin, with ribbon trimmings, and little Miss Zelma Lowe, in pink net over satin, with ribbon trimmings, was a charming flower girl. Mr Bert Woodcock was best man. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the residence of the bride’s parents, when a large number of guests attended. They were received by the bride’., mother, who wore a navy blue costume with accessories to tone. The bridegroom’s mother was attired in navy blue with hat to match. Both carried posies of spring flowers The main toast was proposed by Rev. Kendon. The happy couple, who were the recipients of many congratulatory messages and presents, will take up their residence at Motueka. The bride’s travelling dress was a green ensemble with accessories. Card Tournament: There was a good attendance al the card party held in the Friendly Societies’ Hall on Saturday evening, under the auspices of the Women’s Branch of the Labour Party. Winners were: —Euchre: Mrs Hansby 1, Mrs Alford 2, Mr Leonard 3. Fortyfives: Mr Brewer. At the dance for which the music was supplied by Curtis’s Orchestra, the winners were, Mr Garor and Mrs Inwood 1, Mr Sloan and Miss Grey 2. At the cards last evening, there was also a good attendance, winners in the euchre be.ng. Mrs Hansby 1, Mrs O’Dea 2, Mrs Oldham 3. Mrs Brewer won the 45’s. The ladies’ committee provided an enjoyable supper.

Westport Volunteers: The total enlistments in Westport up to last evening for military service were 68. The following is a list of recruits who enlisted on Saurday and Monday: Ivan A. Bird, chainman, Westport; Albert Duncan, sawmiller, Westport; Kenneth Hayes, linesman, Ariki, Murchison; John McGregor Knight, blacksmith, Westport; John McKenzie, miner, Stockton; Robert McCabe, miner, Stockton; James R. T. McHerron, watersider, Westport; Charles O. D. Roberts, school teacher, Granity; James Tomlinson, labourer, Tiroroa; Francis James Wright, miner, Denniston; Roy S. Hayes, farmer, Ariki, Murchison.

Education Board: The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held on Monday, Members present were the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (chairman), Messrs Harkness, Hamilton, Carling, Baritrop, Knapp, Wilkins and Newman. Accounts totalling £12,272 were passed for payment. The secretary reporteu that no reply had been received to the Board’s application for a grant to erect a new school at Black’s Point. The chairman was instructed to interview the Minister with a view, to an .early grant for this work being made. The Board agreed to a certain modification of the plan for a new school at Denniston in order to reduce the cost of the buildings the architect to discuss the matter with Mr Taylor, contractor, who tendered for the new school. Plans for a new teacher’s residence at Karamea were approved and forwarded to the Department for a grant. A power point was granted at the teacher’s residence at Burnett’s Face. Inangahua Landing Comrnit.•tee was granted £lO towards the cost of extending the shelter shed. The Mawheraiti Committee’s application for an extension to the shelter shed was declined as the additional attendance was considered only temporary. Mr Roberts, head teacher at Stockton, telegraphed that he had been accepted for military serv.ee and would join the forces in two weeks. The Board expressed satisfaction nt the spirit of duty shown by Mr Roberts and decided to; assure all teachers wh o joined the forces that their in- , terests would be looked after while they were serving their country. '1 he Board also decided to ask the Department for instructions to the policy concerning teachers who enlisted. Applications for admission t 0 the Training College close on October I, but the Board has not yet been informed as to what number of students will be the Board’s quota for this year. The Millerton Committee was granted £8 towards their incidental expenses. Murchison Learn-to-Swim Committee was granted £7 towards transport exI penses of pupils. trict. The Secretary reported that H. Bradley had telegraphed agreeing to the Department’s offer for conveyance of Ngakawau-Hector pupils to Granitv new school. Mrs J. Tyler, 'Ngakawau, wrote asking that her two children, attending Granity Convent School, be allowed to travel to school by bus. The Chairman was of the opinion that Convent School children should be included. The Board decided to ask the Department for permission to carry these children. Mr J. Moyle notified the Board that his proposed visit to England as exchange teacher has been cancelled. Mr H. Stanley, head teacher at Coll ngwood District High School, was appointed head teacher at Denniston District High School from two appl cants. The Department declined to approve of proposed conveyance of Rooney children to Inangahua Junction school as the price was too high.

Buller Rugby Union: The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Buller Rugby Union was held last evening, those present being, Messrs M. B. Scully (chair), T. Scanlon, W. Atkin C. M. Robertson, K. Shrimpton, N. Ryan, J. McEnaney, J. Mason, and tne secrc tary, Mr W. A. Craddock. Mr J. Mason was welcomed nack to the meeting, after his long absence. Mr W. Thurlow, referee of the Ngaka-wau-Old Boys’ junior match recently who was present at the meeting, in an explanation of the protest made by the Ngakawau Club stated that the captain of the Ngakawau Club said that although there were only three Old Boys’ players on the field, and the starting time was late, the team dosired to play the match. Old Boys gathered together some more players and the game finally started at 10 minutes to 2. As far as he was concerned, the referee stated that he would have called the game off, but the visiting team wanted to play the match. The game would, in the other case, have been awarded to Ngaka* wau. Mr C. M. Robertson moved that the referee’s decision be upheld, and that the Old Boys’ Club be fined 5s for arriving late on the field. The motion was seconded by Mr J. Mason and carried. It was further moved that, the result of the match be unaltered. Inward correspondence was received as follows: —From the Nelson Rugby Union and Golden BayMot ueka Union, thanking the Union and managers, and public, for the response during the recent schoolboys' tournament.—Received. From Mr A. K. Richards, representing the First Aid Corp in Westport, in connection with members of teams handling injured players when first-aid men arc on the spot to render such assistance. Mr Scully stated that the letter was in order. He moved that the clubs be circularised asking them not t 0 allow players t 0 interfere with players who had been injured, but to allow the ambulance men to attend.
