REEFTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. REEFTON, September 19. Through an explosion o£ gelignite at Maruia yesterday afternoon, a young man, J. L. Hales, son of. Mr and Mrs Hales, of Greymouth, had his right hand almost blown off while at . work. He was brought into Reefton Hospital, where the remnants of the hand were amputated. He also received some wounds on the face from the effects of the explosion. He may yet lose his right forearm, while Ins left arm and hand are injured. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, the newly-appointed SM. and Warden, Mr G. G. Chisholm, held his first court in Reefton. Before the business of the Court commenced. Mr L. E. Morgan, senior member of the bar in Reefton, extended a welcome to the Magistrate, and wished him a pleasant stay on the West Coast, at the same time affirming that he could be assured that he would have the assistance of the bar in making his duties as light as possible Mr T. H Lee, senior Justice in Reefton, aiso welcomed Mr Chisholm, wishing him pleasant time on the West Coast, and hoping that it would as well be a profitable experience for him in his position as S.M. and Warden. Mr Chisholm replied very briefly, thankingl them for the welcome, saying that he hoped to dispense the law in a fair and equitable manner.
