GROW MORE WHEAT!

N.Z. Controller’s Advice TO N.Z. FARMERS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 6. “For wheatgrowers, the line of service which they can give to the puolic at this time is clear-cut—they must grow more wheat,” said the Controller of Wheat and Flour (Mr R. McPherson) i n a statement to-day. “The time for sowing is now short but much can be done before the end of September. Even a few additional acres, planted by each farmer, will help. The countrv has confidence that thev will do their job.” The citizens of the Dominion, said Mr McPherson, had faced the present grave emergency with a determination to see it through, and the Ministers of the Crown were being bombarded with offers of assistance from organisations of both the primary and secondary industries. “Obviously all people are anxious to render public service and thus pull their weight in war and many are only waiting for a lead as to how best to help. To some, their line of service is still obscure, but for the wheat grower, nothing could be more clear'cut. By growing wheat enough for iurselves, we can surely help our Mother Country and her soldiers in the field —first, by leaving the Australian surplus for Britain and her allies, and, second, by releasing valuable shipping space for other vital needs. The duty of the wheatgrowei is plain, and he needs no urging <o grow more wheat, but this opportunity is being taken to point out to him his best line of service in the interest of not only New Zealand but the whole British Commonwealth.” “The Minister for Supply”,,said Mr McPherson,” has been greatly cheered by offers of assistance from the United Wheatgrowers, the Grain Merchants’ Association, , the Flour Millers’ Society, and others, all of whom had offered to co-operate with the wheatgrowers in this effort for the nation.
