BLACKBALL NOTES

—— (Our Own Correspondent.! It is with regret that one has to regret the termination of the service to the Employment Department of Mr. J. Aynsley, Main Road, Blackball, who has been employed in die Moonlight area, supervising the miners engaged on the gold subsidy scheme, for upwards of two years. Mr. Aynsley, who for the greater part of his life-time has been engaged in gold mining activities, on a large scale, was a thoroughly competent supervisor, and was welt liked by •all the men who had the privilege of working under him. These men, and his many friends in the district, will join in wishing him a long and healthy life in his retirement. The area previously under Mr. Aynsley' has been taken over by Supervisor Clark, as has also, the Red Jacks area, previously under Supervisor R. O’Brien, who has also retired. Mr. R. Clark wishes to acknowledge receipt of the following sums to the Spanish Red Cross Fund, and to assure the donors that the money will be forwarded to the proper source;—Young Rebel (Blackball), £1; J. K. (Blackball) ss; J. G. (Blackball) ss; total £1 10s. Mrs. D. W. McDougall, Clifford Street, who has been spending nn extended holiday in Wellington, has returned to her home. Accompanying Mrs. McDougall is her sister-in-law, Mrs. W. Rogers, of Wellington, who intends spending a holiday in Blackball. Mr arid Mrs R. ICoquhoun, Hart ( Street, are at present spending a holiday with their daughter in Christchurch. Messrs J. M. Park and ’A. Pirrie, who are workers on the South Island East Coast Railway, spent last week end in Blackball, returning per car through Otira Gorge on Sunday last. They report that all the rormer Blackballites now resident over there are enjoying good health. Mr. J. Barry, Club Hotel, who has been spending a holiday in Christchurch, has returned to his home. Miss May Stenhouse, Brodie Street, who has been away on annual leave, has resumed her duties at the Dominion Hotel. Vandalism appears to become a sort of second nature to some people in our vicinity, while we have no objection to anj' one who may be caught, out in the hills, using the tent accommodation in Garden Gully or Mulcare Creek, very decided exception being taken to any person taking advantage of the privilege to damage any of the property. Any person so found will be prosecuted by the Employment Department. Mr. D. J. Cochrane, who was sent home to the Old Country last August for special medical treatment, arrived back in Blackball on Friday evening of last week after a good trip out via Panama by the s.s. “Arawa,” the same vessel by which he travelled home. Mr. Cochrane has had the advantage of some of the best surgical and medical advice in the Homeland, though nothing seems to have ,done him much good, he appears to be a little more supple since he went away. He is in excellent spirits and has great tales to tell of the industrial and political position in Great Britain and Europe generally. He noted some remarkable changes that had taken place during the sixteen years he had been absent from the Home land, and expresses himself as being glad to be back again with his own family in New Zealand. All his friends, and they are many, will be pleased to learn that Dave is in good spirits and shall be pleased to meet any of them should they care to call on him at his home in Stafford Street.

I regret to state that the health of Mr. Jim McDonald, Christchurch, and previously of Blackball, is causing his family some concern. His friends will trust to learn of his becoming well again soon.
