CAR CAPSIZES Driver Killed NEAR METHVEN. TPer Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. One man died from his injuries and another was seriously hurt when a motor-car capsized on the Ashbur-ton-Methven road about two miles from Methven on Saturday afternoon. The victims were:— Killed: Richard Packer, aged 21, single, a farm-hand, whose parents live at Portobello, Dunedin, a fractured spine. Injured: Wilfred Pugh, aged 43, single, a farm-hand, of no fixed abode, concussion and laceration of the head; condition very serious. Both were admitted to the Ashbur- I ton Public Hospital, where Parker died about 3.15 p.m. yesterday. The car, which was owned and driven by Parker, was travelling along the bitumen. It is reported that it suddenly swerved to the side of the road and back on to the bitumen, where it capsized. The force - of the impact with the hard road separated the bodj' of the car from the chassis, which travelled another 27 feet before stopping. Both men were thrown out. and picked up unconscions. They had been employed at harvesting by Mr S. Robinson, of Methven, for about two days, and visited Methven on Saturday morning when rain interfered with the harvest. They were returning to Mr Robinson’s farm when the accident occurred. An inquest will be opened this afternoon.

Two Men Killed

BALCLUTHA MISHAP. DUNEDIN, February 15. Two men were killed and two injured when a car capsized on the Main South Road seven miles from Balclutha on Saturday evening. The victims were:— Killed: William Hunter, married, aged 60, of Balclutha; John Muir, single, aged 27, of Balclutha. Injured: Clarence Albert Barnett, single, aged 24, of Benhar; Owen Wvber, single, aged 24. The car was returning from the Wingatui races when a tyre burst, causing the car to turn over, throwing the occupants heavily on the road and killing two practically outright. The other two suffered slight injuries. Barnett, the driver of the car, was later arrested on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car. NAPIER MAN KILLED. NAPIER, February 13. William Henry Dallison, proprietoi of Pacific 1 House, Marine Parade, lost his life this afternoon, when a car he was driving left the road and rolled over a 20-foot bank on Poraiti Road, eight miles from Napier. Dallison’s wife and two daughters and a man boarder were also in the car. Mrs Dallison suffered badly from shock, and her daughters suffered minor cuts and abrasions. It is understood that the car was travelling up an incline and at a narrow part of the road Dallison pulled the car slightly over to the right to avoid deep ruts. The car left, the road and rolled down a bank into a pine plantation, pinning Dallison underneath. After receiving attention, the other occupants of the car were able to go home. ELDERLY WOMAN’S DEATH. PALMERSTON N., February 13. Clara Louisa Egger, aged 63, married, of Waituna West, died in hospital on Saturday from injuries received when the car in which she was a passenger collided with another at an intersection of country roads near Palmerston North. COLLAPSE OF DRIVER. CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. George William Stroud, of Nightcaps, was returning by car from Nelson on Saturday. At Waipara he turned into the side of the road, and collapsed at the steering wheel. He was admitted to hospital, and died early the same evening. FATAL FALL FROM TRAM CAR. AUCKLAND, February 14. Fatal head injuries were suffered by Henry Eustace Eskerigge, a retired farmer, aged 65, of Mount Lden, when he fell from a tramcar. Another passenger on the tram, James Brewin, of Avondale South, eaught Eskerigge as he fell, but was unable to save him. both men falling heavily to the roadway. FATAL FALL. FROM POWER POLE NELSON, February 14. Fatal injuries were sustained by Stanley Charles Pahl, when he fell from an electric supply pole in Vanguard Street, breaking his neck. Pahl was a married man, aged 37 years, and was an employee of the Nelson City Council's Electrical Department. ■
