WAIUTA NOTES

lOur Own Correspondent] Mr. R. J. Avery has received word of the recent death at Melbourne of his step-brother Mr. Earnest Beckhurst. The late Mr. Beckhurst was a formerly well-known resident of Waiuta, having been employed at the Blackwater mine. He left here some years ago to reside in Melbourne. Sympathy is extended to the relatives in their bereavement, Mr. Dalton of Christchurch, was a week-end visitor to the township as the guest of his daughter Miss M. Dalton (Dental Nurse). Mr. and Mrs. Jas Scott, Mesdames J. Ward, J. Baron, and J. Chapman who have been visiting Christchurch, have returned. Ron King’s leadership of the All Black side on Saturday was an inspiration. Incidentally Ron first saw the light of day at Waiuta, where his parents resided, so along with the rest of New Zealand, Waiuta in particular is proud of his prowess and leadership on the football field. Mrs. G. White, a well-known resident of the township, is an aunt of Ron King. The weekly Catholic card evening held in the sample rooms on Monday evening drew a good attendance. Miss Evelyn Nohra won the ladies' prize, while Mr. M. Murray annexed the gent’s. A meeting of the Waiuta branch of the New Zealand Labour Party will be held in the sample rooms on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 sharp Arrangements will be made for the visit of Mr. Jas. O’Brien M.P. for Westland. All members and intending members are asked to attend. The annual general meeting of the Waiuta branch of the Inangahua Gold and Coal Miners’ Union will be held on Saturday morning at 10.30 a.m. when all members are requested to attend.
