OBITUARY

PATRICK RALEIGH MULCARE. The death took place yesterday at Greymouth of Mr. Patrick Raleigh Mulcare, after a lengthy illness. A native of Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, the late Mr. Mulcare was 87 years of age. His parents were among the earliest settlers in South Gippsland, seven members of the family coming out from Ireland in the years 1839 and 1841. Deceased was a member of the Victorian Police Force for many years and held the rank of Sergeant. He assisted in the hunt for the Kelly Gang and had a great fund of stories of the old gold digging and bushranging days of Australia. He was invalided from the Police Force 43 years ago, and since that time had been crippled. He was a fine type of man with a very kindly nature, but of a retiring and reserved disposition. A booklover, the late Mr. Mulcare had also an excellent memory, and was able to recite his favourite poet, Burns, from “cover to cover.” For many years, he had contributed verse to “The Bulletin,” Sydney;, and “The Advocate,” Melbourne, while several of his compositions were also published in the “Argus.” The late Mr. Mulcare, whose wife predeceased him some 15 years ago, had lived with his son, Mr. James Mulcare, of Ngahere, since that time, and had previously resided in Otago. He was from early manhood a stalwart of the Labour Movement. He is survived by two sons, Messrs James and Edward Mulcare, of Ngahere. The funeral will take place to-day at Blackball Cemetery, leaving the Ngahere Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m.
