BY POLITICAL ENEMY THE LATTER SLAIN At Louisiana Parliament House THE SENATOR SURVIVES. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received September 9. at 7.50 p.m.) LOUISIANA. September 8. Senator Huey Long was shot and wounded as he'was passing through a corridor between the Louisiana State House and State Senate Chambers tonight. The assailant of Long was Doc-ior A. C. Weiss, a Baton Rouge eye specialist, and a member of an anti-Long political family. D’r. Weiss was shot and killed by Senator Long’s bodyguard. Senator Long was given a blool transfusion late to-night. He has a good chance of recovery. The Senator is reported to have been shot in the abdomen, but the bu let passed through his body, thus barring complications. The assailant of Long, J) f . Weiss, was dressed in a smart white suit. He tired a gun al Long as he walked along

the corridor after leaving the House, where he had been directing legislation i n a special session of the Louisiana Legislature. Senator Long staggered down stairs to the basement, with blood flowing from his mouth. His body-guard ini mediately mowed down Dr. Weiss with a sub-machine gun. The bullet-ridd-'ed body of the attempted assassin was left lying on a floor, near State Governor Alien’s of flee. The wildest excitement then prevailed in the State House of Parliament, which was immediately cleared. Senator Long was rushed to a Sana torium, where Doctor Arthur Vidrine, the Superintendent of the New Orleans Charity prepared to opera-t'e. On.'y Lieutenant-Governor James Noe, a close personal friend and trusted political adviser, was permitted to accompany Senator Long to the operating room. Motive of Shooting RETALIATION ON LONG. FOR ELECTION BOUNDARY “JERRYMANDER” (Received Sepember 9 at 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 9. The man who shot Senator Long, Doctor Weiss, was 29 years of age, He was a graduate of Tulane University, lie had also studied medicine abroad. The father of deceased is Doctor Carl A. Weiss, senr., who formerly was the president of the Louisiana Medical Association. It is possible that the motive for the shooting attached to the father-iu-law of the late Dr. Weiss who is Judge B. n. Pavy. The latter is the leader of the anti-Long political faction. In fact one of the bills which Senator Long presented to the Louisiana Legislature would have defined anew the judicial district which Judge Pavy has represented, with a view to adding enough prolong voters to it to defeat Judge Pavy at the next State election.

The late Dr. Weiss’s wife was formerly Miss Yvonne Pavy, and she also has been active in anti-Long polities. REVOLVER JAMMED AFTER FIRST SHOT. N I*: W YORK. September 9. Although the building was crowded at the time of the shooting of Senator Long, only a few people actually witnessed it. According to the testimony of three State police, who wore assigned to guard Senator Long, they were some distance away when Doctor Weiss pressed a revolver into Senator Long’s abdomen and shot. According to these State police the weapon jammed, thus preventing Dr. Weiss firing a second shot, which probably saved Senator Long’s live. The three police immediately started firing at Dr. Weiss, but they denied using machine guns. Long’s Chance SAID TO BE GOOD. FEARS OF DISORDERS. NEW YORK, September 9. At the hospital it was found that the bullet struck none of Senator Loup’s vital organs, and, after the blood transfusion the physicians declared that Senator Long had a good chance of recovery. It is said that Senator Long remained conscious throughout, and that with blood streaming from his mouth he directed that the Coroner hold an inquest into Dr Weiss’s death. Fearing disorders a regiment of the National Guard has been ordered to mobilise for the inquest hearing tomorrow.
