A statement that there are approximately 3000 returned soldiers receiving relief in Auckland was made today by the President of the Auckland R.S.A., Mr. J. W. Rendall. A complaint has been received that the R.S.A. was not liberal enough with the funds. It had received £3406 from the Canteen Funds Board and £2410 from the War Funds Council in twelve months. Commenting, Mr. Rendall said there were about 3000 returned men receiving relief and the £6OOO averaged £2 each. If the R.S.A. could be shown how to do more with the money, it would be only too pleased to do it. The Japanese training ship Shintoku Maru sailed from Auckland this afternoon for Kobe, where she is due to arrive in about 50 days. Captain Hayashi, in a farewell message thanked the Government and the public for their mist generous hospitality and expressed anxiety for some opportunity to repay it. He apologised for the ship’s failure to visit Wellington as expected, and said that they had been forced to seek the nearest harbour, after the most terrific storm they had ever had. “lie has got to be taken of! the road,” said Magistrate Hunt to-day, when informed that William Arthur Hawkins, 35, salesman, who pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxication when in charge of a motor van. had been fined thrice before for similar offences

U I think he had better get another job,” said the Magistrate when Hawkins’ counsel said he worked with the van for his living, and was willing to take out a prohibition order. “If I don’t put him off the road” continued the Magistrate, “the insurance companies will probably do so. lie will be fined I*lo and his license cancelled, and no other is to issue for two years. ”
