BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) BLACKBALL, May 13. The term holidays of the public school commenced to-day. It is to be hoped that the weather will be on its best behaviour during the vacation. Miss Bridgewater, of the school staff, has gone to Christchurch for the vacation, while Aliss Fox and Mrs Askenbeck, also of the teaching staff, are spending the holidays at Hokitika. Alessrs Hopper (District Inspector of Labour) and. Strong (Alining Engineer) were visitors to our township I on departmental business on Friday. The annual re-union of the Blackball and district branch of the R.S.A. was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday evening last. There was a large attendance of local members and visitors. Air. Arthur Go nun, local President, occupied the chair. The following toasts and songs were given:— “The King”, “Fallen Comrades,” and t( Blackball R.S.A. ’ proposed by Alessrs S. Foster and T. Knowles’ orchestra supplied many items, which were thoroughly enjoyed and Air. Knowles also acted as accompanist. Alessrs John AT. Nicol and Dave Cochran are expected home this week from Christchurch, and it is pleasing to know that their trip has been of a beneficial nature.

The polling locally in the elections last Wednesday was below expectations, even allowing for those who -were disfranchised through being behind with their rates. Quite a number of people could not be persuaded to go along and record their votes. This seems a pity after the interest manifested in other parts of the county. It is a healthy sign when people take a real live interest in their local politics and incidentally it helps to keep the successful candidate up to scratch.

Messrs 11. Ritchie, A. McGougan, R. Duncan and R. Clark were appointed as representatives of the local Aliners’ Union for “Argus” Paper Board meeting at Greymouth on Saturday.
