BIG RIVER GOLD MINES. Report for week ending 9th Mav. states: No. 4 North Drive advanced’? feet. Total distance driven 50 feet, with six inches of broken stone in reef track. Stopes: No. 5 stope is following stone G feet wide. This stope will be slight’y shorter, but reef is well defined of hard clean stone. Rise 45 feet up: In one branch drive, following stone two feet wide. No. 4 South Drive.- Face not extended during the week. Stopes:No. 3 Stope is now producing high grade ore. 11 feet wide. Main Shaft: The filling for 30 feet is now completed and sinking commenced. Battery: Now working two shifts. Owing to the Easter Holidays and Anzac Day, coupled with a breakage in the shaft timbers above No. 2 Level of the Mine, insufficient stone was sent to the battery to enable crushing operations to be carried on with the full two shifts, therefore crushing time was much diminisheTE In view of this it has been decided to defer battery clean-up until the end of this present month. Report for April states: No. 4 South Level: Driving north and south on this level has been continued and 100 feet driven on the lode to date In the north end a fault is showing cutting the stone off; prospecting will be carried out here later on. In the south face the reef is 2 feet 6 inches wide and looks promising for continuing further. No. 5 Crosscut: This crosscut is now 31 feet 6 inches from the surface the country being good for driving. A contract has been let for 900 feet of crosscutting, the contractors to start work on the Ist May. Air and water pipes have been laid and the machines installed in the face. Stoping: The leading stope in No. 4 backs (south end) has been risen for and partially taken off, the reef averaging about 3 feet Gins in width. Stone four feet wide and lying flat is also being driven out under No. 3 Intermediate, and this may lead on to something of value later on. Battery: 325 tons were sent to the battery and 340 tons crushed for a return of 195 ozs. 7dwts. melted gold. The cyanide department treated 221 tons of sands for a recovery of 58ozs. 18dwts. bullion. The concentrates, roaster produced 44ozs. 7dwts of bullion. The total estimated value of these returns is £2075. In addition, about 14 tons of concentrates have been saved, valued at £3OO. (Note: Tn estimating the above values, gold has been taken at 150/- per fine ounce). MOSSY CREEK DREDGE. The Mossy Creek dredge return for last week was 73ozs 17dwt for 8000 yards of wash treated. The Maori Gully wash-up last weel was 68ozs. 12dwt. of retorted gold fo 1011 hours’ working.
