Visit of Hon. S. G. Smith

WESTPORT, May 12,

The Minister for Education made a round of visits to th© various Buller schools yesterday. He was accompanied to the State School by Mrs Smith, the Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny), Hon. Mclntyre, Mr P. C. Webb, M.P., Mr J. 11. Powell and Mr J. 11. Harkness. The grounds, school and dental clinic were inspected. The Technical School’ and St. Mary’s College were ‘J a ter visited. The party, augmented by Mr Bromley and his staff, Mr T. Smith (Engineer, Grey mouth), J. Niven, E. Collier (Mining Engineer), and Miss Calvert (of the Minister’s staff) later visited the country districts. A call was made at the Cawthron Institute’s plot and the Minister was impressed with all he saw. All schools in the country were visited, and the Minister hoard several deputations. A request for a grant for completion of a swimming hath at Denniston was given a sympathetic, hearing bv the Minister. Other matters! were also brought to the notice of the Minister. and were noted for later consideration. Deputations were also met at Hector and Granity. The party then proceeded to Millerton and heard several deputations on school and unemployment matters. Hon. Mr Smith and Mr Bromley attended a meeting of local body representatives and the Mining Committee in the County (’hanibor s in the evening. The Mayor officially welcomed the Minister, and Mr I*. C. Webb also spoke. Messrs T. Cranson and E. Potter, on behalf of the unemployed, made several requests to the Minister, and Mr J Neighbours (Waimangaroa) made roproent alions on behalf of unemployed in that township. The customary votes of thanks concluded the business of a very busy day for the 3Ministerial party.

Caledonian Society: A large number of members of th© Millerton Caledonian Society were the guests at an Ingleside held at Westport last evening under the auspices of the local branch. Mr J. W. Shanks welcomed the visitors, and Chief Jack (Millerton) responded. An excellent programme of dances and songs contributed to a very pleasant time. The programme was as follows: Yodelling duct by Messys R. Smith and S. Davis; “The Auld Scotch Songs,’’ by Mrs Porter; Highland Fling, bv Nova Jones and Margaret Gear, these per formers being pupils of Miss Margaret Kerr, also sword dance as an encore; song. “The Battle of Stirling.’’ by Mr J. Cullen; recitation. “Pierotte,’’ and as an encore “What His Mother Used to Do.” by Betty Mara, whose artistry wa s greatly admired: H’ghland dance, “Sean Triubhais ” bv .Miss Al. Kerr, also Highland Fling as an encore number, both being warmly applauded; song. “The Trumpeter,” by Mr Strong; s n ng, “Bonnie Mary O’ Argyle,” by Miss F- Daliantyne. Accompaniments were played bv M n sdames Ballantyne and Swan with Airs Curtis placing the. dance mus’c, and Messrs J. Mathieson and A. Nichols acting as M’s.C. Shipping: 'l’he Titoki arrived from Grey mouth yesterday and sails this evening for Pieton and Wanganui. The Kanna is in port'. Morgan’s Pictures WESTPORT. “Turkey Time” is the typical comedy one might expect from the combination of Tom Walls, Ralph Lynn and Ben Travers. “Turkey Time” will be presented at the Victoria Theatre to-night and to-morrow night, and it presents a n abundance of piquant situations with some exhilarating dialogue and the settings arc most realistic. Recommended by Censor for adults. Excellent supporting subjects.

WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. “Of Human Bondage” is the starring attraction for Leslie Howard and Bette Davis on Wednesday and Thurs day and matinee at Victoria Theatre the supporting artists being Frances Dee, Kay Johnson, Reginald Denny. Alan Hale. etc. Adapted from W Somerset Maughan’s celebrated novel, the story of a man who loved a wo man a s cold as ice.
