LONDON, May 8. Gold 144/04, dollar 483 11-16,' franc 73 3-8. The wool sales opened with strong competition. Merinos 10 to 124 per cent. advance. Crossbreds 10 per cent, higher. At the wool sales 7809 bales w r ere offered including 3971 New Zealand. About 7020 Australian and New Zealand were sold. There was a good representative selection, attended by a large crowd. Home and Continental competition was brisk. Compared with March closing the best Merinos both greasy and scoured, advanced by ten to fifteen per cent, and other descriptions ten per cent. Crosslbreds showed an all round advance of ten per cent. New Zealand slipe halfbred lambs C.F.M. Belfast realised top price 144 d, average 14d. BRISBANE, May 9.

Prices compared with opening rates this week were very firm, when ten thousand bales were offered at the wool sales. Almost a total clearance was made. There was a full attendance of buyers at the sale held yesterday, when a large catalogue was offered by the Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association of New Zealand Ltd. Competition was keen and prices were fully on a par with last sales rates, with the exception of racks, which were a shade easier.
