WAIUTA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) The many friends of Mr T. Reward heard with regret of his death, which occurred at the Christchurch Hospital on Friday last. Deceased underwent an operation on Friday morning, but passed away under the anaesthetic. An inquest was held in Chrifltchureh on Saturday morning, and was adjourned sine die, pending a post mortem examination. The funeral toot place at the Bromley Cemetery. Christchurch, on Monday afternoon, a large number of ex-Wai-uta residents, now living in Christchurch, attending to pay their last respects to deceased’s memory. The Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association was also represented. The lute Mr Heward was a member of ihe Waiuta sub-branch of the R.S.A. He was a native of England, about 42 years of age« and had no relatives in the Dominion. Of a quiet, unassuming nature, he was verv popular with his fellow workers; and his tragic passing is regretted by a wide circle of friends. Messrs H. Dodds (a life-long acquaintance), R. Williams, E. Wallenberg and J. Harvey attended the funeral, and returned by Tuesday evening’s express. His Lordship, Bishop Hilliard, Anglican Bishop of the Nelson diocese paid a visit to the township on Friday last, accompanied by Rev. Beaumont and Mr A. Knowles (Blackball). The visitors were entertained by the parishioners in the Club rooms in the afternoon. Mr T. R. Hogg presided, and introduced His Lordship to those present, and extended a hearty welcome to their distinguished visitor. The Bishop suitably responded, and stated that] although his stay among them would be a short one, he felt that he would thoroughly enjoy it. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. In the evening, the Bishop conducted the service at St. Barnal a? ’s Church, before a crowded congregation, and officiated at the christening of the infant son of Mr and Mrs E. J. Rose. The Bishop who is an eloquent speaker, took for his text the subject of Baptism. Mrs C. Waters is spending a holiday 'with relatives in Christchurch. Miss B. McNeil, who has been an inmate of the Reefton Hospital for some weeks, has been dischorged from the institution.

Hon. S. G. Smith (Minister of 'Education and Employment) paid a brief visit to the township On Tuesday. The party comprised Messrs P. C. Webb. M.P. (Buller), Jas. O’Brien, M.P. (Westland), W. Bromley (DeputyChairman Unemployment Board). W. J. Shanley, Deav 11 (Ministerial Secretaries), and J. Mcßride (Mining Clerk t.o the Unemployment Board). They were met on arrival by Mr E. W. Spencer (Superintenednt of Blackwater Mines) and Mr J. B. Auld (County Chairman). After partaking of dinner at the Empire Hotel, the party visited the school, where short addresses were"given by Minister and Mr Webb. The party were then shown over the Blackwater Mines’ property, and a visit was made to the battery. Soccer —Dobson defeated Waiuta in the West la nd Cup competition by four goals to 1, after an interesting game played under favourable weather conditions and before a good attendance. J. C. Douglas was the outstanding player for Waiuta. The local Soccer Chib have a bye this week-end. Mr Jas. Scott capably controlled the game. The League fixtures for this week-end are: Seniors v. Auld (County Chairman) and D. Panckhurst were defeated in the Reefron Riding, being replaced by Messrs F. W. Archer and F Seawright. Residents of Waiuta and surrounding districts are reminded of the bazaar and sale of work to be held in the Miners’ Hall on Saturday. The proceeds are being devoted to the construction of 'the Waiuta swimming baths, and the function is being conducted under the auspices of the Waiuta Women’s Institute. There will be side shows galore, and the usual attractions connected with a bazaar, so oil up and help with this worthy object.

The King’s Jubilee celebrations passed off quietly at Waiuta. The Union Jack fluttered in the breeze from the top of the poppet heads, while work at the Blackwater Mine proceeded as usual. The school children were granted a holiday, and were entertained at a sports gathering on the Recreation ground in the afternoon, and wore admitted free to tho pictures in the evening.
