REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, May 8. A slip on the Black’s Point road took place last night at - the spot known as the Whirlpool. A erack occurred in the at this place some three or four days ago, and this was boarded up. Now a great part of the road has fallen into the river, leaving a very narrow jiassage for cars. In fact the road is so narrow that it is impossible for a pedestrian to pass a cai- at this spot. The County Council have p ut men on to repair the road but it will bo an extensive job, as there is a straight fall on to the river bed of nearly twenty feet, and the side of the road, will require to be timbered up strongly to support it. The funeral of the late Mr W. E. T. Sehwass took place this afternoon, when there was a very large attendance, friends of the family being present from all the centres of the West Coast, and Nelson, including a. particularly large (number from Reeft'on where the deceased was a general favourite. A very large number of floral tributes testified to the respect iu which he was held. The service at the graveside in the Suburban Cemetery was read by the Rev. W. Bell.

Al the monthly meeting of the Reefton School of Mines, there were present: Messrs [, Patterson (Chairman), T. C. O’Brien, Jas. Patterson, J. Noble. T. Patterson (Secretary). The Director’s report stated: Classes have been held as usual in Waiuta (weekly), Blackball (weekly), and Reefton (daily), and on the evenings of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The members now attending are as follows: Blackball 11; Waiuta 11; Reef ton 22. Total 44. The number of assays done is as follows: Gold and silver 505 (Mines Department 26); bullion assays 5; coal dust analysis 5; since May Ist, 131; total 646. New plates were obtained for the pulveriser and a spart set has been ordered. 'Owing to the excessive wear ou the machine and the time taken to handle large quantities of material the Director considers it impracticable to treat bulk lots of quartz with the present machinery. Mr J. M. Bishop, Blackball, reported on the electricity class being held there, and that he was giving one ( lecture a fortnight. The average attendance to date has been five students. W. S. Pratt’s resignation as member of the Council was accepted with regret and a letter of appreciation is .to be sent to him for his valuable assistance. It was resolved that the school be represented at the complimentary social to Mr Pratt, and that one guinea be donated to the presentation fund. The Secretary submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure for the past three months, which showed Hie School to be in a satisfactory financial position.
