The stewards, after hearing evidence, removed the disqualifications in regard to Fragrant, Zephyr, but dismissed the appeal by C. Brown, the owner-trainer, relating to Pentheus, and also estreated the appeal fee of £2O. The disqualification of the jockey, B. Ellis, was reduced to twelve months, and his appeal fee was returned. TROTTING REGULATIONS. . ONE HANDICAPPER FOR N.Z.? A remit aimed to bring about fixed penalities for handicapping and the simplification of the new system of handicapping, was discussed at a meet-, ing of the committee of the Canter-' bury Owners’ and Breeders’ Associa-, tion. The Chairman (Mr. G. R- Hunter), who was the Association’s delegate to a conference of those interested in the subject, said that under the proposed scheme there would be one permanent handicapper in control of deputies where required, the former having the authority and opportunity of correcting any errors or inconsistencies that the deputies might make. This power at present did not exist, and much of the present weakness lay in the apparent incapacity of some of the handicappers to understand the system, and of others to apply the fine points with any degree of uniformity. During the past eighteen months a system of cheeking and supervising handicaps had been carried out, but this had been a corrective and not a preventive scheme, continued Mr. Hunter. The number of corrections in i the Official Calendar, and the comp- risouß of inconsistencies published

in many newspapers were examples of the need for a simplified scheme with accuracy and efficiency which should greatly benefit the sport of trotting. “Another important advantage would be the reduced cost of handicapping to the various clubs,’’ said Mr. Hunter. “To-day the clubs throughout New Zealand pay about £l3OO for this service, and the racing clubs a further sum. It is proposed to levy clubs for the amount required, and it is anticipated many hundreds of pounds yearly will be saved by the new method proposed, and this should appeal to all clubs at the present juncture. ’ ’
